What is matcha?

Matcha is finely ground green tea powder made from whole tea leaves. Unlike traditional tea, the entire leaf is consumed, which makes the flavor and ingredients particularly intense. Originally from traditional tea culture, matcha is now versatile – whether pure as tea or in desserts, drinks, and modern recipes. Its flavor ranges from mild and slightly sweet to pleasantly tart and fresh.

  • The Origin: Originally from traditional tea culture, today a modern classic.
  • The special feature: The entire leaf is consumed, for maximum intensity of the ingredients.
  • The taste: A profile ranging from mild and slightly sweet to pleasantly tart and fresh.

Green Matcha Power – Ingredients

Matcha is a natural, sugar-free alternative to classic soft drinks – provided it is prepared purely with water. Since the entire tea leaf is consumed, matcha contains a particularly large number of valuable ingredients.

These include:

  • Catechins & Antioxidants
  • Amino acids
  • Calcium
  • Beta-carotene
  • Vitamins C & E
  • Caffeine (Theine)

Gentle Wake-Up Call: Matcha Instead of Coffee

Those who need an energy boost in the morning or afternoon often reach for
coffee. Matcha offers a balanced alternative – with a milder
taste and a pleasantly gentle awakening effect.
The caffeine it contains (also called theine) is perceived by many as more even
than in coffee. One serving of matcha (approx. 2 g) contains around 60–70
mg of caffeine, while a cup of coffee can provide about 80–130 mg depending on preparation.
Ideal for anyone who wants to stay awake without consuming too much caffeine at
once.

Here's how to prepare Matcha to

Matcha is not steeped like classic tea; instead, it is mixed directly with water. The fine powder dissolves in the water – this way, the entire tea leaf is consumed, and its character can be fully experienced. Whether you prepare Matcha traditionally or use modern kitchen utensils is up to you. Both methods lead to an intense, creamy result. For easy and optimal preparation, we recommend suitable Matcha accessories.

01.

Preparing Matcha – traditionally

For the traditional preparation, you need a matcha bowl (chawan), a bamboo scoop (chashaku), and a bamboo whisk (chasen). Heat soft water to about 70–80 °C. Put matcha into the bowl, first mix it with a little water to a smooth paste, and then add the remaining water. Whisk until frothy with the bamboo whisk.

02.

Preparing Matcha – modern

Even with a cup, teaspoon, and milk frother, matcha is easy to prepare. Proceed as with the traditional method: first, mix a paste, then add warm or cold water and froth. For a finer texture, we still recommend a bamboo whisk. You can add milk, plant-based drinks, sweeteners, or ice as desired – ideal for Matcha Latte or Iced Matcha.
